I'll be honest: I'm not looking forward to moving. I dislike that feeling of displacement and alienation. I miss old friends terribly, and often find that making new friends is a bit of a struggle, out of worries that finding new friends will somehow make me disloyal, or be a dishonor to my old friendships. I don't like living out of boxes. There's plenty of things to mourn, but I'm also trying to look at the positives of moving somewhere new, too.
A list of things I'll miss about our home in Baltimore, in no particular order:
- Walking around the apartment in the dark without bumping into anything.
- Being able to call (insert local friend here) and ask them to come over because I'm having a bad day.
- Our church family.
- Our extended family.
- Knowing where the nearest grocery, home improvement, fabric, and craft stores are.
- Knowing where things are in general.
- My babysitters!
- Delicious fresh crab in the summertime.
- Hiking in Patapsco State Park.
- The beautiful light that comes in our kitchen windows in the mornings.
Things I know I should be looking forward to, when I'm not mourning the things I'll miss:
- Finding new fun locations for photography.
- Meeting and networking with other photographers in the NYC area.
- The community living at St. Vladimir's; having other people around going through the same transitions.
- Meeting the new kid, whenever he decides to arrive.
- Having two bedrooms, and laundry facilities nearby!
- A new town to do touristy things in.
- Being geographically closer to my side of the family, as well as my cousin Heidi.
- That feeling six months in (or so) where your new place starts to really feel like home.
- Getting rid of the junk we've accumulated over the past 5 years.
- (Intentionally left blank for something to take me by surprise.)
I should let the reader know that I am open to advice and stories about moving that will help me cope with the big changes ahead!
